The institute is more than a classroom; it is a community. Each cohort is intentionally small to foster deep professional bonds. Members graduate not just with a certificate, but with a lifelong set of peers across the commonwealth.

Applications are due by Jan. 1 each year for that year's institute.

Applicants will be notified of their acceptance status by Jan. 15 of each year.

The Virginia Women’s Municipal Leadership Institute (VWMLI) is a premier leadership development program designed specifically for women in local government who aspire to serve as chief administrative officers (CAO) or in high-level executive leadership for cities, counties and towns in the commonwealth.

 

A collaborative effort between Virginia Women Leading Government (VWLG) and Virginia Tech’s School of Public and International Affairs, the institute provides a bridge between technical expertise and the visionary leadership required at the highest levels of public service.

Mission

To increase the number of women serving in executive positions in Virginia’s local governments by providing them with the tools, network, and confidence to successfully navigate the path to CAO.

Curriculum

The institute’s curriculum is curated by seasoned practitioners and academic experts. The program covers the "hidden" and high-stakes aspects of leadership, including:

Politics

Navigating the relationship between elected bodies and administration.

Finance

Mastering the complexities of local budgeting and fiscal policy.

Leadership

Developing the emotional intelligence and stamina required for executive roles.
